2011-2012 Scholarships Awarded
The McMahon Parater Foundation distributed a total of $1,276,540 in scholarship awards for the 2011-2012 academic year.
● The Diocese of Richmond provided $1,076,540 for tuition assistance for Catholic students attending diocesan Catholic schools. These funds were obtained through an increased offertory program in parishes throughout the diocese.
● $200,000 in scholarship funding was awarded by the foundation to students, regardless of religion, who attend both diocesan and private Catholic schools. This financial support was obtained from Diocesan education funds provided through previous estate gifts.
Through the efforts of parishes and the McMahon Parater Foundation
board of directors, we will continue to strive to make Catholic
education more affordable and attainable for families in these tough
economic times.
Campaign for Catholic Schools Endowment
The McMahon Parater Foundation Board of Directors, and Bishop Francis X. DiLorenzo in consultation with his advisors, have determined that a campaign for endowment funds will provide much needed resources to continue the rich heritage of Catholic schools and their mission of sound academic and spiritual formation. This program will seek to raise substantial new money that may satisfy the most important priorities of these schools.
Those participating in this initiative will embrace the plan to strengthen schools throughout the Diocese suffering the effects of declining enrollment due to economic challenges facing many families who desire Catholic education for their children.
This will be an extraordinary effort to involve current and new supporters throughout the Commonwealth. When considering the rationale for such an endeavor, one should contemplate the vital role Catholic elementary and secondary educational institutions play in the community. Each serves to educate in a value-based atmosphere. The young men and women who graduate are prepared for collegiate-level study and to eventually become leaders in their communities.
The campaign is currently under development with a select group of lay leaders meeting with the Bishop and the Office of Catholic Education to prepare a campaign plan and clear statement of the case for support.
